OPPOSES TUITION FEE HIKES FOR UC AND CSU
SACRAMENTO – Assembly Higher Education chair Anthony Portantino
(D – La Cañada Flintridge) expressed his concern regarding
the Governor’s budget proposal to raise tuition fees for both
University of California and California State University students.
“I am disappointed that the Governor’s budget proposes
to raise tuition fees for students at the University of California and
California State University systems again this year,” said Portantino.
“Since 2002, fees have increased by 90%. I believe we must prioritize
funding for higher education in California to ensure that all deserving
students have an equal chance to participate, regardless of their socio-economic
status.”
The Governor’s budget proposes to increase fees for the University
of California campuses by 7 percent for all undergraduate, graduate,
and professional school students. Law and business students’ fees
will increase by 10 percent. The UC Board of Regents will be considering
the proposed fee increases at their March meeting.
The Budget also proposes a 10 percent increase for undergraduate, graduate,
and teacher credential students at the California State University.
The CSU Board of Trustees will be considering the proposed fee increase
at their March meeting.
