Assemblymember Portantino Responds to Governor’s Proposal to
Eliminate Columbus Day

LA CAÑADA FLINTRIDGE – Assemblymember Anthony Portantino (D-La Cañada
Flintridge) criticized Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger’s proposal to eliminate observance of
Columbus Day.

“The Italian American Community is deeply disappointed with the Governor’s proposal to
eliminate a cherished holiday. For many years, Italian Americans sought formal recognition of
Columbus Day and were proud when it was recognized in 1934. Italians were the largest
immigrant group in California for much of the 20th century, having played an important role in
developing our state’s economy, culture, and education system. During World War II, Italian
Americans were the largest ethnic group to serve our country. Columbus Day is an opportunity
to recognize these accomplishments and is a source of pride for Italian Americans in California
and throughout our country. Terminating the recognition of Columbus Day in California will
send an adverse message to this proud and thriving community and I implore the Governor to
reconsider this proposal.”
