SACRAMENTO, CA – On Sunday evening, Governor Schwarzenegger deferred to a public review
process already in place by vetoing Senate Bill 545 by Senator Gill Cedillo. The veto sent a strong message
to those individuals attempting to prematurely lend legislative credibility to build a massive and
prohibitively expensive tunnel to connect the 210 and 710 freeways in Los Angeles.
In his veto message, the Governor called the bill “unnecessary” and cited the current process as “the appropriate
vehicle to determine the scope and feasibility of a project to address the transportation needs in the I-710
corridor…”
“What a relief for the residents of the 710 corridor,” said Assemblymember Anthony Portantino (D- La Cañada
Flintridge) in response to the veto. “This bill was a clear attempt to avoid public discussion and predetermine
the outcome of the 710 process. I hope that the Governor's veto sends a message to Caltrans and the L.A.
Metropolitan Transportation Authority that the residents in our area are tired of being manipulated by a rigged
process, incomplete analysis and insufficient public review of this massive and complex project. In the wake of
the Governor's veto, I hope Caltrans will rethink any effort to cut corners or fast track this disaster of a public
project.”
