Sacramento – Assemblymember Anthony Portantino (D – La Cañada Flintridge) today announced his selection of community activist and Temple City Mayor Judy Wong as the 44th Assembly District Woman of the Year.

“With great excitement, I am pleased to name Judy Wong as the 2008 44th Assembly District Woman of the Year”, said Portantino. “Her commitment and dedication to the community and our shared constituency is tremendous and laudable. Judy Wong is an asset to Temple City and the San Gabriel Valley.”

“I am extremely honored that I have been named Woman of the Year,” said Mayor Wong. “Through this award I know that Assemblymember Portantino is recognizing the City of Temple City as well. That makes this twice as important to me. I’m proud of my community and am very happy that we are represented by Anthony in Sacramento,” she continued.

Before being the first elected Chinese American member of the Temple City Council in 2003, Mayor Wong served as the President of the Temple City Chinese-American Association for two terms. Mayor Wong has devoted countless hours volunteering on the Gang Advisory Committee and the Asian Community Advisory Committee for the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and recently organized a “Support Our Kids” forum in order to help address common issues facing kids from different ethnic backgrounds. Mayor Wong volunteers her services as an interpreter to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, assisting victims of domestic violence. She also provides interpretation for various schools in the San Gabriel Valley area.

“Mayor Wong has demonstrated a long-standing commitment to improving Temple City through activities which extend far beyond her responsibilities as Mayor. It gives me great pleasure to recognize Mayor Wong with this honor,” continued Portantino.

Mayor Wong will be recognized during a special session of the State Assembly on March 10th. The event will be preceded by a breakfast reception for Women of the Year Honorees, hosted by Lieutenant Governor John Garamendi.

Assemblymember Anthony Portantino was elected to serve the 44th Assembly District in November of 2006. The district encompasses Altadena, Duarte, La Canada Flintridge, Pasadena, South Pasadena and Temple City. It also includes portions of Arcadia, Monrovia, Mayflower Village and the Northeast Los Angeles neighborhoods of Glassell Park, Hermon, Highland Park, Mount Washington and Eagle Rock.
