June 23, 2008 (916) 319-2044

***MEDIA ALERT***

WHO: Assemblymember Anthony J. Portantino, Chair, Assembly Higher Education Committee

Lakesha Harrison, President, AFSCME 3299

Representatives of the California Nurses Association

WHAT: Assemblymember Portantino will unveil ACA 5, a constitutional amendment which would establish a jointly governed pension board with meaningful employee representation.

ACA 5 (Portantino and Yee) is scheduled to be heard later that day in the Assembly Higher Education Committee.

WHEN: Tuesday, June 24th, 2008

12:00 noon (NOTE TIME CHANGE!)

WHERE: State Capitol South Steps (“N” Street side) – NOTE LOCATION CHANGE!

Sacramento, CA

UC Workers and retirees are the only state workers in California without representatives with a vote on how pension money is invested, how benefits are administered, and on what governance policies the fund should have. With assets totaling over $48 billion, shared governance would improve pension security by reducing conflicts of interest and providing broader oversight of pension investments and benefits changes.
